This year's theme makes the most of the growing awareness around carbon emmissions with the theme “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”. Recognising that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, the United Nations Environment Programme is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on their carbon emissions and how to reduce them.
In response to this theme, RRI is launching an innovative community membership programme as part of the Galle Rainforest City project. Members are encouraged to make positive lifestyle changes to reduce their carbon footprints, and plant trees to lock-up their personal carbon emissions, to help in the global struggle against global warming.
Amphibian Fauna Project
We have just instituted a project supported by the National Geographic Society, that will look at ways to study our amphibian fauna without destructive sampling. We are hoping that frogs can sing their way to safety.
Forest Garden Program
We have entered into an MOU with Counterpart International to promote and help develop their Forest Garden Program in Sri Lanka. Forest Gardens are being enriched with biodiversity among communities along the Gin Ganga, through the application of Analog Forestry. This activity contributes significantly to the Rainforest Corridor, being constructed by RRI.
